A new take on the age-old saying regarding pictures, the Internet has added a whole new perspective on this phenomenon for investigators. Let’s start with looking at a typical ad in Craigslist, except there’s one thing not typical about this ad:
Notice that the picture is crisp, high-quality, and large in size. Craigslist image handling typically produces 300×225 pixel sized images and you’re only allowed to upload up to 4. These pictures are actually stored on an image hosting service, such as photobucket.com. By following the image link, we can learn a lot more about the nature of the poster.
Sometimes the account used by the poster is under his real name. That can give you a big clue on the true identity of the poster. In this case, it is still relatively anonymous nn350z. Obviously he likes his Nissan sportscars, but there are thousands of those guys around. You can also browse through this album by clicking Previous and Next. Sometimes you might find other vehicles for sale as well if the poster just uploads all his pictures to a single album. But for this example, let’s click on the left hand link titled nn350z’s album.
Here we are, 3 more albums “recently” posted that correspond to 3 other vehicles. This is the info you were looking for. Now you can start the formal investigation, and perhaps find the location of where these pictures were taken (see other posts).
